One week to go | Disciplined Fluidity

Frames, Field Notes, limited editions and the final preparations are coming together.
One week to go...
This time next week, Disciplined Fluidity will be open.
The last few days have been spent in the studio doing all the things that happen behind the scenes before an exhibition reaches the wall — cutting mounts, framing prints, painting frame edges, preparing Certificates of Authenticity and Field Notes, folding card collections, checking hanging systems and slowly turning a studio full of work into an exhibition.
And it is finally beginning to come together.
One detail I’ve particularly loved has been painting the inner edges of the frames around some of the smaller Whispers of Twilight paintings. It is a relatively small change, but it has completely transformed them — drawing the individual paintings together and giving the collection a beautiful sense of continuity.
A carefully considered collection
I’ve also made the decision to keep what I bring to the exhibition intentionally focused.
Alongside the original Whispers of Twilight paintings, I’ll be showing all five of my Arms of the Ocean premium limited editions, together with the smaller Arms of the Ocean Minis and my three card collections.
Rather than bringing older editions simply to fill the print rack, I wanted everything in the space to feel connected.
The result feels much stronger: original paintings at different scales, beautifully produced editions and smaller pieces that offer different ways to live with the work — but all belonging to the same visual story.
Disciplined Fluidity
The exhibition brings my expressive coastal paintings together with the contemporary furniture of master furniture designer Edward Wild.
Our work comes from very different disciplines, yet both practices are rooted in that curious balance between discipline and freedom, precision and intuition, structure and flow.
For me, there is another layer to the exhibition too.
Many of the paintings in Whispers of Twilight grew from walks Ed and I shared along the North Devon coast — watching the light fade, the tide move and familiar landscapes gradually dissolve into dusk.
To see those paintings now being prepared to sit alongside his furniture feels particularly special.
And for the first time, the paintings will also be accompanied by my Field Notes — small written reflections offering a glimpse into the landscape, memory or moment behind each work.
