Artists Statement
My work is an expression of the raw, elemental energy of the coastline. Rooted in my experience of walking the South West Coast Path in North Devon, I seek to capture the shifting light, movement of the sea and untamed beauty of the landscape.
Through expressive mark-making, fluid watercolour and layered mixed media, I translate the rhythms of nature into dynamic, abstract compositions that hold both the power and fragility of the natural world. Rather than depicting a particular place, I work from memory, atmosphere and felt experience—allowing the landscape to be distilled through emotion, gesture and material.
Painting is more than a visual practice for me; it is a way of connecting with something deeper and moving beyond observation into feeling. I respond intuitively to the energy of wind, water and earth, allowing each painting to evolve through a dialogue between control and freedom. Years of disciplined practice provide the foundation from which instinct, experimentation and fluidity can emerge.
This connection to landscape also shapes the workshops and sketch-walks I lead in watercolour and expressive mark-making. By encouraging people to slow down, look closely and engage creatively with their surroundings, I hope to create space for presence, curiosity and a renewed relationship with nature.
At the heart of my practice is a profound reverence for the natural world. The coastline is not simply my subject; it is a reminder that we are part of something larger. In a time of ecological uncertainty, I hope my work encourages people to pause, reconnect and recognise our shared responsibility to protect the landscapes that sustain and inspire us.
