Last Light captures a moment of fleeting beauty in the aftermath of a violent storm. Painted during a period of personal healing, it reflects the quiet that follows hundred-mile-an-hour winds, echoing the artist’s own journey through deep emotional turbulence.
Within the darkness, a faint, almost imperceptible sliver of light emerges—a reminder that hope can endure even in the most challenging moments. The painting speaks of resilience, the quiet strength found in our darkest hours, and the promise of renewal.
 
I began working on my Arms of the Ocean – Coast Path Memories collection as a conversation between myself and the paintings. Bursts of intense, energetic mark-making and sweeping, joyful brushstrokes were followed by pauses—time to reflect, regroup and respond.
Textured layers began to play against one another: some catching the light, others becoming hidden, their secrets known only to me. Painting en plein air for the first time was wonderfully freeing. I watched the light shift and felt the weather and sea spray along the North Devon coastline—sitting high on the rugged Hartland Peninsula or tucking myself away on the cliff edge at Westward Ho!
Walking the cliffs and tors, I observed the constantly changing weather and its effect on the light, forms and tones of the sea, clouds and land. I became fascinated by what was concealed and revealed as storms, sunsets, spring tides and moments of stillness transformed the coastline.
Absorbing this elemental energy and pouring it into my paintings helped carry me through a period of profound personal change.
